“How much does it cost to have a sofa reupholstered?” It’s one of the first questions we’re asked, and a fair one. Reupholstery is an investment, and you deserve a straight answer before you pick up the phone.
The truth is there’s no single figure that fits every piece. The cost depends on the size of the item, the fabric you choose, and how much work is needed underneath the fabric itself. What we can do is give you realistic ranges based on the work we see most often here in Cannock, so you know roughly what to expect before you get a personal quote.
What Affects the Price of Reupholstery
Four things drive the cost of any reupholstery job, and they matter more than the size of the piece itself:
- Fabric choice. A budget-friendly weave and a top-of-the-range designer fabric from a brand like Warwick or Bridge of Weir can differ enormously in price per metre, and a sofa can easily need 15 to 20 metres.
- Frame condition. If the timber frame, springs, and padding underneath are sound, you’re only paying for fabric and labour. If they need rebuilding, that adds to the cost, but it also means your furniture will last another few decades rather than a few years.
- Style and detail. Piping, buttoning, box cushions, and loose covers all take extra time to do well. Simple, clean lines cost less than an ornate, deep-buttoned design.
- Size and number of pieces. A single armchair is naturally quicker and cheaper than a three-piece suite.
Typical Reupholstery Price Ranges
As a general guide, based on typical UK reupholstery projects:
- Dining chair: £155 to £220
- Stool: £80 to £300, depending on size
- Single chair: £750 to £1,250
- 2 seater sofa: £1,500 to £2,000
- 2.5 seater sofa: £2,000 to £2,500
- 3 seater sofa: £2,350 to £2,850
- 3.5 seater sofa: £2,600 to £3,100
- 4 seater sofa: £3,000 to £3,500
These figures are a starting point, not a quote. Fabric alone can move a price up or down by several hundred pounds, and every piece that comes through our workshop is assessed on its own merits.
Is Reupholstery Cheaper Than Buying New?
Often, yes, especially once you compare like for like. A well-made three-piece suite reupholstered in a quality fabric will usually cost less than replacing it with equivalent quality new furniture, and you keep a frame that’s already proven itself over years of use rather than gambling on flat-pack construction.
There’s also the piece itself to consider. If it’s a family heirloom, or simply a shape and frame you’ve never been able to replace on the high street, reupholstery is the only way to keep it while making it feel brand new again.
